Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm says he is fed up with being beaten to the punch on freedom by a bunch of sheep shaggers.
This follows an announcement by the New Zealand Government that it will legalise the sale and use of e-cigarettes in the country.
“This is yet another example of Australia being left behind on very basic issues of personal choice. Whether it’s the freedom-to-marry, tax reform and now the legalisation of e-cigarettes containing nicotine — our neighbours are roaring ahead on freedom.
“Forget about a banana republic. Australia is at risk of becoming the hermit kingdom of the Asia-Pacific”.
Senator Leyonhjelm’s remarks follow his introduction of an amendment to remove nicotine solutions from Schedule 7 of the Australian Poisons Standard — providing consumers with the ability to legally purchase e-cigarettes containing nicotine.
“The Australian Government believes that if you smoke, vape, gamble or buy your kids a happy meal you’re somehow a bad person.
“E-cigarettes are far safer than smoking. An overwhelming numbers of scientists, academics and even bureaucrats recognise that. They’re also part of an emerging, innovative and fast-growing vape industry which already employs hundreds of Australians.
“Australians can buy e-cigarettes containing nicotine when they visit the United States, the United Kingdom and now New Zealand. It’s time we provide Australians with the same freedom in their own country”.
